Summary

Responsible for own medical / surgical practice under the supervision of the consultant, section head and/or chairman.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

I. Clinical Responsibilities:

1. Runs a specialty clinics as assigned.

2. Participates in the management of patients in the field of Liver & Small Bowel Transplant & Hepatobiliary – Pancreatic Surgery as determined by the Chairman. Patients will be under the name and responsibility of the Chairman, Head or Section or designee in accordance with standards of medical care laid down by KFSH&RC.

3. Assumes shared responsibility with Consultant Adult Transplant Hepatology, Consultant Paediatric Transplant Hepatology and Consultant, Transplant & Hepatobiliary – Pancreatic Surgery for the management of transplant recipients.

4. Provides on-call coverage on rotational basis for the Section of Liver & Small Bowel Transplant & Hepatobiliary – Pancreatic Surgery.

5. Assumes responsibility for patients under his care. Liaises with various support service departments and medical specialties to provide appropriate and timely medical care, in accordance with the standards laid down by KFSH&RC.

6. Complies with all hospital standards and policies pertaining to acceptance, eligibility, admission processes, consultation, daily patient care, operating room, outpatient practices, and patient discharge.

7. Conducts ward rounds as per policy and reassesses inpatients under care. Documents findings in medical records.

8. Participates in patient preparation for procedures/surgery and performs procedures/surgery as indicated in the signed clinical privilege form.

9. Participates in following up on investigation results for inpatients and outpatients and modifies treatment accordingly.

10. Ensures appropriate patient preparation for procedures/surgery and performs procedures/surgery as indicated in the signed clinical privilege form.

11. Attends specialty clinics, outpatient clinics, day surgical units, day medical units, special procedures, treatment areas and shares on-call schedule as per requirements.

12. Attends and actively participates in the Morning Endorsement Meeting, Transplant Selection Meeting, HCC meeting and other departmental and divisional clinical activities.

13. Performs any other related duties, as assigned.

II. Academic Responsibilities:

1. Participates in directing and advising junior staff on patient management, especially in the field of Liver & Small Bowel Transplant & Hepatobiliary – Pancreatic Surgery as assigned by the Chairman and / or the Director of the Organ Transplant Centre.

2. Guides and actively participates in the training and teaching of Residents, Fellows, Assistant Consultants and Junior staff as assigned by the Chairman and/or the Director of the Organ Transplant Centre.

3. Keeps abreast with all of the latest techniques and developments, especially in the field of Liver & Small Bowel Transplant & Hepatobiliary – Pancreatic Surgery, following and implementing them on a selective basis to improve technical standards.

4. Actively participates in the educational activities and training programs of the department.

5. Participates in national and international medical conferences.

III. Research Responsibilities:

1. Participates in clinical, basic and translational research projects and publishes papers in accordance with Research Advisory Council Policy in order to advance knowledge, improve the quality of post graduate education and contribute to the national and international recognition of KFSH&RC.

IV. Administrative Responsibilities:

1. Undertakes administrative duties as assigned by Section Head and /or Chairman.

2. Participates in all mandatory departmental activities and serves on departmental and hospital committees, as required.

3. Assists the department in the development and implementation of techniques and practices that help maximize the utilization of all resources within the department and across the hospital.

4. Abides by the current hospital and medical staff bylaws, all relevant rules, regulations and policies and keeps updated of any changes that might occur.

5. Actively contributes to the Division and/or departmental documentation of patient care processes and outcome in the chart and/or Organ Transplant Registry.

6. Participates in the department and/or the Organ Transplant Centre activities, i.e. Staff meeting, OTC Core Lectures, Research Forum, etc.

Education

Graduated from an accredited medical school, completion of accredited structured training in a recognized training program in the subspecialty.

Experience Required

Minimum of four (4) years subspecialty experience required in a major liver transplant & Hepatobiliary program.
