Summary
Performs a variety of orthopaedic technical procedures including the application, maintenance, and removal of casts, traction and other orthopaedic appliances as directed by physician’s written orders.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
1. Applies, repairs, and removes all types of casts, including body jackers and hip spicas according to physician’s written orders.
2. Assists physicians, orthotists and nurses in the evaluation, fitting, adjusting, and follow-up of patients with orthopedic appliances.
3. Provides information to patients and families regarding care of the cast and/or orthopedic appliances.
4. Changes dressings and removes sutures on outpatients, using proper aseptic techniques.
5. Applies, adjusts, and checks traction for inpatients on a daily basis.
6. Accurately communicates and/ documents all relevant information in a timely manner.
7. Observes, reports, and records symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients, on all procedures performed.
8. Maintains positive professional interpersonal relationships with patients and their families, co-workers and other members of the health care team. Participates in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication and teamwork. Treats colleagues, patients, and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.
9. Demonstrates collaborative multi-disciplinary partnerships working towards the achievements of constant improvement in quality patient care.
10. Maintains orthopedic equipment and supplies. Reports equipment failures, safety and security issues, and/or reduction of supply inventory to Supervisor.
11. Follows all Hospital related policies and procedures.
12. Participates in self and other’s education, training and development, as applicable.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education
Bachelor’s or Associate Degree/Diploma in Orthopedics is required
Experience Required
Grade 07:One (1) year of related experience with Bachelor’s, or two (2) years with Associate Degree/Diploma is required.
Grade 08:
? Four (4) years as a Splinting Assistant at KFSH&RC or (Grade 07) related experience is required.
? Average of annual performance appraisal at least (3.5) for the last four (4) years
? Fifty (50) hours of cumulative continued medical education [CME] is required.
Other Requirements(Certificates)
? Must demonstrate a willingness and aptitude for working with both children and adults.
